Mal's Manifesto

Why Am I Here? The Modern Web Really Kinda Sucks.

Originally a part-rant, part-ramble, part-essay full of hyperlinks about why I think much of the modern web experience is horrible was going to be here. I ended up scrapping most of it because I figured that if you're on the indie web, chances are good that all the same stuff had probably crossed your mind at some point. As stated before, the concept of web revival I discovered on MelonKing's site resonated with me. There is not a single point made or idea presented in that journal that I disagree with. It inspired me to make my own neocities site to share my thoughts and experiences and to express myself artistically through technology.

I've only visited a handful of pages so far but the aspect that has drawn me in is that every single site is wholly a reflection of the author: who they are and what they value. This is in contrast to other places like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (I guess "X" now) where, although you can upload your own content, you can never fully claim those spaces as your own. Neocities is highly accessible and helps recreate the experience of Web 1.0 and the early years of Web 2.0 wherein the Internet was truly a vast, decentralized web of inter-site portals shuttling you to faraway lands where you never quite knew what you might find. To create a personal website like those hosted by neocities is to embrace individuality, and by providing numerous hyperlinks to all the things we find interesting, cool, or weird, we encourage others to explore and discover far beyond what we alone could provide.

In the spirit of all I wrote above, I hope to make this space my own little digital garden. I'm not sure what exactly I want it to be yet or how far I want to take its design. I may start out by just keeping tabs on little projects, or maybe just little snippets of things I find interesting. Something I do know for certain, though, is that regardless of whatever this space becomes, I don't want it to be a sink. Rather, I want to ensure that anyone who happens to step into my domain can always find a gateway to some interesting external place so as to facilitate good ol' fashion web surfing.
